Dear Students and Supporters,

I am honored to have founded Bushido Martial Arts Dojo in 2000 with the goal of teaching traditional karate, practical self-defense, and kickboxing to the community. Over the years, our dojo has grown and expanded to include several locations throughout the Phoenix and Westville areas of Durban.

I am proud to say that our dojo has produced numerous provincial and national champions in karate and kickboxing, and we continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of martial arts training.

As a 6th Dan black belt with 35 years of experience, I have had the privilege of training under some of the most respected masters and instructors in the world. My passion for martial arts and teaching has only grown over the years, and I am committed to passing on my knowledge and skills to my students.

At Bushido Martial Arts Dojo, we believe that martial arts training is not just about physical fitness and self-defense skills. It is also about developing discipline, respect, and confidence in oneself and others. Our dojo is a place where individuals of all ages and skill levels can come together to learn, grow, and support one another.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion for martial arts with my students and the community. I look forward to continuing to grow and improve our dojo, and to continue to inspire and empower individuals to reach their full potential through martial arts training.

Sincerely,
Sensei Brian Govender

Senior Sensei

Mishelle Govender

Sensei Michelle Govender emerged as a karate prodigy from a young age, hailing from a family deeply immersed in the discipline. Introduced to karate by her father, Sensei Dennis Kumarasamy, a fifth-degree black belt, at the age of 4, Govender’s journey was set in motion. Her father’s guidance instilled in her strength and discipline, laying the foundation for a remarkable career.

Her rise in the world of karate was meteoric. She earned her first gold medal at just 5 years old, secured her black belt at 10, and started teaching soon after. By age 12, she had achieved a 1st dan black belt, and at 18, she earned junior and senior KwaZulu-Natal Provincial colors.

One of the high points of her career was her participation in the 9th Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association World Championship in England in 2007. Currently holding a 3rd dan black belt, she has practiced karate for 40 years and has taught for 27.

Sensei Govender’s dedication extends to her role in the International Funakoshi Shotokan Karate South Africa (IFFSKSA) since 2002, under Hanshi Eric Govender’s leadership.

Despite facing injuries and challenges, Sensei Michelle Govender’s love for karate has never wavered. As a female pioneer in a male-dominated field, she has shattered barriers and continues to inspire her students.

In Sensei Michelle Govender, we find a true martial artist whose journey exemplifies discipline, passion, and resilience. Her legacy will inspire generations of karate enthusiasts to follow their own paths in the martial arts world.
